Steve Paxton is known as the creator of Contact Improvisation. This American dancer belonged to the field of modern dance, and along with other dancers began investigating dance as a means of communication by contact. As a practical to restore the broken social ties and to show that it was possible to communicate with the other through contact of the skin. To prove that it was possible that the other will collect status information teammate dancer for the simple fact of maintaining a continuous fluid contact, which arose a "little dance". In this regard Paxton said that "the skin is the best source of images, since it works in all directions at once".
He was also one of the founding members of the Judson Memorial Church in New York, where he presented most of his choreographies.

Currently the practice of Contact Improvisation is very important in the development of the discipline of dance, being integrated in various university curricula as well in autonomous workshops,  also currently exist the so call Jams, where groups of people, not only related to dance gather together to practice contact.
